Dandelion and Spring Break

March 19, 2009

I'm taking the week off (sort of) for Spring Break, and I hope you are enjoying your Spring dandelion greens--either sauteed in olive oil and fresh, minced garlic with sea salt on top, or added to fresh salad greens for a food-as-medicine detoxer.  If you have non-chemical-sprayed dandelions in the yard and do not have a dog, you can save yourself big money by eating that instead of signing up for some $88 (or more) detox program that may or may not be good for you.  Worst case scenario is having to spend $2.99 for a bunch of fresh dandelion greens in the health food store. You can also make a vinegar from it and use that as a daily digestive tonic.

My hubby and I are enjoying unseasonably warm weather in Steamboat Springs, and though we'd like some more snow, we're enjoying the two hours a day when the snow is soft enough for decent skiing.  Tomorrow we plan to snowshoe instead, and are relishing the down time.

Regular "breaks", whether Spring Break or a daily break between work and home life or a weekly break with Sundays "off", can help you recharge your vitality through rest.  Saying "no" to one more thing is often not easy, but well worth it when you start to breathe more deeply and gain perspective on life's challenges.  Even 5 minutes a day can be a great start; do it today.  Do nothing, for 5 minutes.

Thanks for tuning in.

Puffy Eye Reduction

Welcome to my first Blog post; hey, I never claimed to be an early adapter, even though I was the third employee for an internet start-up company in the mid-1990's.

But I'm nearly always an early riser, and today was no different--except I needed to look like a human by 7:30 AM for a TV  appearance on Channel 18 in Steamboat.  Maybe that's easyfor you, but at 50, I have never appreciated dim lighting and afternoon appearances more!  I thought you might be interested in how to reduce the puffiness under your eyes--for free.

To start my wake-up process, I enjoy 1-3 cups of weak black tea (usually Earl Grey or Yorkshire Gold) while reading a novel for 15-20 minutes, followed by a little meditation.  When the tea bag cools, I like to dab it under my eyes where I sometimes have some puffiness in the morning--especially if I ate wheat the day before, which I try not to do.  Since black tea is an astringent, it makes things shrink--including that puffy undereye area.   Dab that used tea bag in your puffy areas 2-3 times over a 10-15 minute period--and know that black tea also helps protect you from cancer.
