Letting Go

It may be worth $500 to you to read this one.

Today is a big day for my husband and me; our home, and my office, of 10 years went on the market today--softly. We won't even have signs up until tomorrow.  This is the 7th property I've sold myself, saving well into the six figures total--but not everyone is cut out for selling their own home.  If that is the case and you need a serious professional with her heart and integrity on the tiller, call my dear friend and Realtor, Tami Spaulding with The Group, Inc. in Fort Collins. More on Tami soon.

One of the things I think helps sell a home, or let go of anything, is a Native American smudging ceremony, using a "smudge stick" which is lighted enough to emit a bit of smoke.  As you say prayers of thanks to your home, you take the smoking smudge stick to each corner of the room and allow the smoke to go out an open window--along with the past experiences you've had in the place.  I find that doing this ceremony in each room of the house helps release any kind of energy to pave the way for the new owners.  In fact, I once helped Tami with a tough-to-sell property in this very same way.

Tami has been one of my greatest teachers, starting with the first time we met in 1988?  89?, when she gave me a personal example of "what goes around, comes around".  Tami came along when I had given up on a Realtor selling a home for me after 6 months, so lowered the price a lot and wondered why it didn't sell.  Ms. Spaulding told me that I just needed to paint the whole place inside the freshen it up--bingo, it went under contract and closing soon after.

But here's the cool thing about Tami; she didn't hand me a business card, saying "Well, if it doesn't work out, give me a call".  Instead she offered me warm wishes of great success selling our home, which we did.  But the best part of it was meeting Tami who has become a dear friend, client and amazingly helpful Realtor, whom we have used each time we've invested in property over the years.  Though I felt a little guilty not listing with her in the beginning, I enjoyed finding ways to be kind to Tami in return--just for the fun of it.  Palmer House flowers have been a favorite of hers and now El Monte Grill (both In Fort Collins), so that makes me feel like I'm doing something directly to say thank you.  But my biggest thanks yous over the years have been many referrals, a number of which have closed, one of which is listed right now.  Tami has also been on a Board of Directors for support of my practice, and given me a ton of great marketing tips and valuable connections--such as Colorado Women of Influence.

So, now we not only have a positive story about professional women who support each other, but also a little tip for those now reading my Blog.  If you are considering selling a property yourself:

1)  Regardless of who you list with, or not, can you afford to do whatever is needed to prepare the entire property for looking it's best?  Not just the pretty stuff, but things like the furnace (often 20 yr max), hot water heater (10 yr), roof or some concrete may need some work to be appealing to those in a buyers market?

2)  If all owners are working full time outside the home, thereby limiting availability, I don't think it's advisable to sell yourself.  For starters, it will take you a ton of time, energy and some money for quality signs, flyers and marketing (though some of that is free or inexpensive).  It can be stressful enough sometimes just preparing for a showing!

3)  Do you have the right personanlity for this, and a comfort level with pointing out special features of your home without being a pounder?  If you've never been in sales, reconsider the FSBO (for sale by owner) thing and ask your friends for quality referrals.  Or call Tami. 970.377.3700.

Thankfully, it's been pretty fun for me to sell our homes in the past and I think it will be this time, too.  The fall colors are at their peak while the green of Southridge Golf Course behind us still glows with an invitation to enjoy the covered patio along with the peaceful views.  If you are aware of anyone who might enjoy our 5 Bedroom/4 Bath home for $399,000 and they end up closing with us, we will happily send you a check for $500 as a finder's fee.  Send me an email if you'd like a flyer, and while you're on the website at www.SusanEMead.com I suggest you sign up for my newsletter, if you're not on the list.  That's where I focus mostly on health tips.  Today's blog is a little big of a tangent, but hey...isn't that the fun of a blog?

Travel Tips
Written by Susan Mead

After returning from New Mexico where I continued my Gratitude Book Tour, I thought about how challenging it can be to make healthy choices while we’re away.  That’s why I offered some specific Travel Tips in both the Nutrition chapter and Exercise chapter in my book, Take Back Your Body.

One thing that helped me out this time was having a hotel right next to a health food store where I was able to pick up a few carrots and pieces of fruit to balance out all the delicious Mexican food we indulged in while visiting Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Taos.  Though I enjoy the food of the Southwest almost as much as my husband, it’s easy for me to pack on a few extra pounds quickly if I’m not paying attention to portions.  I have found that munching on one of those carrots or apples prior to a meal can help, and if I pay attention to how full I’m getting, it’s easier to enjoy part of the decadent items before I say to myself, “That’s enough.”

I also took a cooler with me, complete with a quart of nettle tea—and a little box of wine—that I was able to replenish with ice.  Making the nettle tea while on the road can be a pain, at best, and may be the time when you resort to using the tea bags found in the health food store.  Or just let go of it while you’re gone for a few days; taking breaks from any part of our daily routine can be beneficial.

The day after getting home, when I felt like a sausage stuffed into my pants, I hit the Farmer’s Market to choose the best of the freshies this time of year.  There is a sense of satisfaction seeing all the bright colors of peppers, eggplant, peaches, zucchini, lemon cucumbers and the season’s finale of corn on the cob lined up after washing, with the knowledge that I’m pretty well set for several days of healthy meals that will bring me back to balance.  The cool thing is that now that I’m over 50, I’ve finally smartened up enough not to beat up on myself for the extra tonnage from too many fried foods and the wheat that I normally leave out of my daily choices.  Instead of “going on a diet” through guilt and disgust, I’m able to look forward to serious nourishment with the knowledge that those few extra pounds will release gently and easily by allowing my body to make the proper food choices.  Saying no to the margaritas will help, too.

Becoming Sane Again

If you're checking dates, clearly I am a sporadic blogger--but I hope to get more regular once I get the Feed thing figured out so that I know someone is actually reading my posts!  Thanks for your patience.

Part of the reason I am "behind" in the Blogging is due to feeling like a hypocrite for a while and wanting my life back--not just my body!  It's rather ironic that I wrote a book to help others get healthier, create more balance in life and time for cooking with whole foods and exercising, yet I found myself working more than ever in the process.  When I was consistently at 60 hour workweeks for a year or more, and feeling resentful since about 40 hours a week was on the computer, I knew I had change no matter what.

So...I've cut back to 40 or 40 hours, am working more with clients which I love (and keeps me off the darn computer, too!) and trusting book sales to sort themselves out for a while.  Tomorrow I go to the third of 11 Vitamin Cottages where I am lined up to speak, followed by a book signing, so it's not like I'm blowing it all off--just doing my best to become sane again.  Now, what about you?  What do you need to Let Go of to allow you to get your sanity back?  If it's all so overwhelming you don't even know, try quiet time in a pretty place--or journaling in same.  And as Eckhart Tolle says in The Power of Now, try practicing acceptance of everything as it is--rather than fighting it and fussing and creating more angst.  For the ultimate test:  practice accepting everything in your life, as if you had chosen it!  That's the black belt stage.

Scottsbluff Book Signings--yes, that's in Nebraska!

Hey, who says you can't go back home?  I've been going back to Scottsbluff, NE to visit my mother ever since 1976 when I graduated from high school and loaded up my 1972 MGB for the University of Nebraska.  But this time is different.

Not only have I had amazing support from my mom, Shirley Mead, in setting up some presentations and book signings there, but have felt so blessed with the help of many other Cornhuskers from my past.   Here's the schedule:

  • Monday,  April 20th from 11AM - 1 PM, I'll be signing books at Copperfield Books in the Monument Mall
  • Tuesday, April 21st at 2:00 PM, you can find me at the Scottsbluff Library, giving a brief talk, signing books and answering health questions
  • Wednesday, April 22nd, I'll be offering a presenation to two different PEO Women's Groups in Scottsbluff, and signing books afterwards
It all sounds like great fun; I'm just hoping I can resist any leftover Peeps from Easter at Mom's house!

March 30, 2009

I'm excited! Take Back Your Body won 1st Place in the Diet/Fitness/Health Division at the Colorado Indepenedent Pubslishers' Association annual gala, following the CIPA College.  The book also won 1st Place for the printing job--credit for that goes to Friesen's of Canada.  It does take a village, but each time I receive an email from someone who's feeling and/or looking better, all efforts are worthwhile.  Thank you for your support!
